The Senate on Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will force the release of investigative files related to the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the lower house and a reversal by the president and his Republican allies. The White House relented after months of trying to block the bipartisan effort involving a scandal that has dogged the president since his comeback to the White House.
Expedited Passage in Congress
The Senate acted by unanimous consent, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, accelerating the process. Just before, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a 427-1 tally.
The public have endured sufficient delay. The survivors have waited long enough,” the top Senate Democrat said in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before asking the chamber to approve it without opposition. “Uncover the facts. Let transparency reign.”
Next Steps
The measure next heads to Trump for his signature. He stated on the previous day that he would endorse the legislation.
Even though the president has for months downplayed the uproar over the authorities' approach of the scandal as a “Democrat hoax”, he signalled his support for the legislation over the weekend, and said he would give his assent if it comes to him.
Response
Opposition lawmakers, along with those affected and their advocates who were watching from a viewing area, cheered after the bill was passed. Lone dissent came from a GOP representative, who stated he feared the measure would disclose specific data of people, potential suspects and others caught up in the investigation.
