A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these medications must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication report a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly starving," described an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
